A letter from Mr Schultz on his decision to leave Apley

Apley Park School,

Bridgnorth,

Shropshire

28 th February 1974

Dear Mrs Morgan

Knowing how rumour and distorted facts can so easily be circulated about matters at the school, I felt that I would wish to tell you personally, of the decision that I and my wife have reached after a great deal of thought and heart searching.

We have both come to the conclusion that the time has come for us to make a decision about our future at Apley Park, and, in the light of my own health and that of my wife, we both feel that we should set a term to our work here. We have decided therefore that it would be best if we left the school at the end of this year, namely at the end of the Christmas Term. This has not been an easy decision to make, after nearly 21 years as Headmaster, and of working together in the school for all these years. Time, however, does not spare any of us, and a recent medical examination, while it did not reveal anything drastic, pointed to a need to follow a less demanding life.

I cannot emphasise enough my sense of pride at having been at first, Millichope School and since 1962, at Apley Park. There have been such great satisfactions for us both in our work, above all in our contacts with the boys, whose lives here have had such a bearing on us, and have given us so many extremely happy memories. When we look back, we feel sure that all the problems we have met, will be completely obliterated by the great joy we have had, and the pride we feel in having been privileged to serve in this place.

There will be the opportunity, perhaps, of speaking to you all on some occasion before we leave. I shall hope than to give better expression to my thoughts about this school, and my great appreciation of the support I have enjoyed from the parents of the boys.

Our best wishes to you,

Yours Sincerely

P.S. As I intend to tell the boys of our decision, on Thursday next, I would be grateful if you do not tell them about it if you should receive this letter before that day.
