Note 1: - The walled garden was about a mile from the
Hall. It was near to where the pigs were kept. The greenhouses were on the west
wall. In there was grown tomatoes, cucumber, grapes and other exotic fruit. On
the south facing wall we grew peaches. The rest of the garden was put over to
vegetables and stuff. Every morning the duty squad with their push barrow, at
6.30 am, went to collect the spuds and veggies for the day peeling the potatoes
in a machine for the cooks. Sessions were included on our timetable for
gardening. One morning while we were working in the garden a group of us raided
the ripe peaches, were caught and fined 2/6d each, which was a weeks pocket
money then. We were also given extra work on a Saturday afternoon. I was given a
sickle and put to cutting long grass outside the walled garden overlooking the
drive. It was a hot day and the work was back breaking; It was easier to stand
up and chop my way through the rhododendrons. Mr Tong, the head gardener, was
not pleased and neither was I. My back was hurting and I was in no mood to
listen to his abuse. I had the sickle, and sent him scuttling for the
greenhouses where he locked himself in and phoned the Hall. Happy Days.
